Melissa oil is steam-distilled from the leaves and flowering tops of the plant. It is sometimes referred to as the bee balm.

It has anti-depressant properties and is indicated for insomnia, hysteria and irritability. It is also an anti-spasmodic and reputed to regulate the digestive system, relieving stomach cramps and nausea.
